A few months back I got a call from a man named Gus who lives up in Gardena, Cal. and wanted to talk about his 67 C-10 Chevy truck. He’d had the truck dating back to his high school years when his Dad gave it to him. Gus bombed around in the truck and put a grip of miles on it over the years. As of late it had been rolled into his side yard while he worked on various other projects such as his 47 Chevy P/U.
Now was the time to start phase 1 of his vision to complete the truck. It all starts with a plan and build it up from the chassis. Gus didn’t want to go the air bag route with this project and decided to keep it legit with a static lowering in the spindles, springs, blocks and C-notch that gives us 5″ in the front and 7″ in the rear. A dropped cross-member, tubular trailing arms, tubular upper and lower front control arms, CPP spindles and naturally disc brakes on all four corners. A 1 1/4″ front sway bar, rear sway bar and even getting the fuel tank out of the cab and installing a 20 gallon rear tank to help with the corner weight. It’s amazing how smart these trucks are and it isn’t terribly hard to get them to perform. These things handle surprisingly well and are like driving a large go-kart with some power. Big thanks to Kevin @ PACIFIC COAST POWDERCOATING for the 60% gloss color job.
Phase 1 is just about done, even down to the brake lines! Next is phase 2 where we address the drive-train. a GM crate “Fastburn” 350 will be used that has 385 HP and 405 torque. Our friends down at Guaranty Chevrolet here in Santa Ana have them in stock as well as the 4L65-E transmission that will back it up. If you need one call there and ask for Jim Smith or Carl Lutes, these guys know there $#!t.
The consensus right now is to to do a “stock” appearing treatment to the engine / trans combo for the vintage theme. Sanderson headers through a 2 1/2″ exhaust system should do the trick to complete the sound.
Stay tuned, more to come!
. . . . one more thing, Gus’s son is competing in the Junior Olympics this very weekend as he runs the 300 meter and also the long jump! . . . go get em’!
